The event

As one of the biggest mountain biking events in the world, the scale of the event was unprecedented in Canberra and was the largest and most successful mountain biking event in Australia to date.

The following numbers illustrate the size and scope of the undertaking:

  • 685 participants from 45 nations
  • 45,000 spectator visits
  • 223 national and international media personnel
  • 450 volunteers
  • 2000 square meters of marquees
  • Broadcast live to over 50 countries (average of 24 cameras for each race)
  • 27 separate award presentations

Our work

With just five months to prepare, our team was responsible for the management of all major aspects of the event, including logistics, sponsorship, marketing, media and promotion, entertainment, trade and expo accommodation, event accreditation, ticketing, infrastructure and event site management, presentations and opening ceremony, protocol (international and national sporting federations), and much more.

Results

The event was a great success, attracting a total of 45,000 spectator visits over six massive days, and contributing $7.9 million to the ACT economy. Over 291 media articles on the event were reported and an estimated 34.1 million people watched the TV coverage from all over the world. The event exceeded expectations of the ACT Government from both an event management and economic benefit perspective.

“The organising committee has ensured a first class experience for everyone from the teams to the UCI officials and, of course, for the thousands of spectators who have come out to support the event. The International Cycling Union has congratulated the organisers of the 2009 Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships staged at Canberra’s Stromlo Forest Park hailing the event a great success”.
